De Blois Room
Stately elegance fit for a bishop
Henry de Blois was the first recorded owner of Hursley when he was awarded the land as Bishopric of Winchester in 1129. Half brother to King Stephen (monarch from 1135 – 1141, the last Norman King of England) and grandson of William the Conquerer, Henry was a thoroughly good egg. His many good acts included building the houses of St Cross and the leper hospital in Winchester, as well as putting the final additions to Winchester Cathedral – so much of Winchester’s heritage originates from this man and such a fine gentleman was the perfect fit for such a fine bedroom as the De Blois room. The land and estate at Hursley continued in the ownership of the Bishops of Winchester until 1552 when it was surrendered to the Crown.
